How it works

Stripe's fee is a percentage of the payment plus, for cards and Klarna, a fixed fee per successful payment. A domestic card or wallet payment online is 2.9% + $0.30; a card in person through Stripe Terminal is 2.7% + $0.05; Klarna is 5.99% + $0.30; ACH Direct Debit is 0.8%, capped at $5.00; a stablecoin payment is 1.5%. On top of that, Stripe adds 1.5% of the payment for an international card, 1% if currency conversion is required, 0.5% for a card number typed in by hand, and $0.10 per authorization for Tap to Pay. If you send the payment as a Stripe invoice, Invoicing adds 0.4%, capped at $2.00; a subscription on Stripe Billing's pay-as-you-go plan adds 0.7%. Each fee is rounded to the cent on its own. You keep the payment minus all of these.

Worked examples

  1. A $100 card payment online from a US customer: 2.9% × $100 = $2.90, plus the $0.30 fixed fee: $3.20 in fees. You keep $96.80. To keep exactly $100 you would charge $103.30.
  2. The same $100 paid with an international card that needs currency conversion: $3.20, plus 1.5% ($1.50) and 1% ($1.00): $5.70 in fees. You keep $94.30.
  3. A $1,000 payment by ACH Direct Debit: 0.8% would be $8.00, but the fee is capped at $5.00. You keep $995. A $200 Klarna payment costs 5.99% ($11.98) + $0.30 = $12.28.
