How it works
eBay's final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale: item price plus the shipping you charge plus the buyer's sales tax. It is worked out per item using the item's category rate. Most categories charge 13.6% on the first $7,500 of each item and 2.35% above that; with a Basic or higher Store the lower rate starts at $2,500. A few categories, such as handbags, jewellery and sneakers, set one rate for the whole sale depending on its size. On top comes the per-order fee: $0.40, or $0.30 when the order total is $10 or less. Top Rated Plus takes 10% off the final value fee but not the per-order fee. Promoted Listings, the international fee and any Below Standard fee are each a percentage of the same total. You keep the item price plus shipping, minus all fees; eBay passes the sales tax to the state.
Worked examples
- eBay's own example: a smartphone sold for $400 with free shipping, 6% sales tax and no Store. The total sale is $424.00. Final value fee 13.6% × $424 = $57.66, plus $0.40 per order: $58.06 in fees. You keep $400 − $58.06 = $341.94.
- eBay's trading card example: a sports card sold for $9,500 with 6% sales tax, no Store. The total sale is $10,070. Fees: 13.25% × $7,500 + 2.35% × $2,570 + $0.40 = $1,054.55. You keep $8,445.45.
- The same $400 smartphone from a Basic Store: cell phones drop to 9.35%. Fees: 9.35% × $424 = $39.64, plus $0.40: $40.04. You keep $359.96, $18.02 more than without a Store, before the Store's monthly fee.
Common questions
Does eBay charge fees on shipping and sales tax?
Yes. The final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale, which includes the shipping and handling you charge and the sales tax the buyer pays. eBay collects the sales tax and passes it to the state, so you never receive it, but it still adds to your fee.
What is the per-order fee?
A fixed fee on every order on top of the final value fee: $0.40, or $0.30 when the order total is $10.00 or less. eBay waives it on sneakers (men's and women's athletic shoes) that sell for $150 or more.
Do I pay less with an eBay Store?
In many categories, yes. With a Basic or higher Store most categories drop from 13.6% to 12.7%, and some drop further, such as cell phones to 9.35%. The lower 2.35% rate then starts above $2,500 instead of $7,500. A Starter Store pays the same rates as no Store. This calculator does not include the Store's monthly subscription.
How does Top Rated Plus change the fee?
Listings that qualify for Top Rated Plus get 10% off the final value fee. The per-order fee stays the same.
What is the Below Standard fee?
If your seller level is Below Standard, eBay adds 6% of the total amount of the sale, rising to 7% once you have been Below Standard for four months or more.
How is the Promoted Listings fee worked out?
In a general campaign you choose an ad rate from 2% to 100%. When an item sells through the promotion, eBay charges that rate on the total amount of the sale, the same total the final value fee uses.
What does this calculator leave out?
Insertion fees beyond your free listings, listing upgrades, Store subscriptions, Promoted Listings priority (cost per click) campaigns, and vehicles, real estate and NFTs. It also assumes the buyer pays in US dollars.
