How much does Stripe charge on £100?
Stripe's fee on an online payment, by the customer's card:
| Payment | Standard UK card | Premium UK card | International card |
|---|---|---|---|
| £10 | £0.35 | £0.48 | £0.52 |
| £50 | £0.95 | £1.60 | £1.78 |

EEA cards are 2.5% + 20p. A card payment that needs currency conversion adds 2%.
How it works
Stripe charges a percentage of each payment plus a fixed 20p for online cards. The percentage depends on the customer's card: 1.5% for standard UK cards, 2.8% for cards Stripe classes as premium UK cards, 2.5% for cards from the European Economic Area and 3.15% for cards from anywhere else. If the payment has to be converted into pounds, Stripe adds 2%. Klarna starts at 4.99% + 35p. Bacs Direct Debit costs 1% of the payment, at least 20p and at most £4. In person, cards cost 1.4% + 10p (EEA cards) or 2.9% + 10p, plus 10p per payment taken with Tap to Pay. You keep the payment minus these fees.
Worked examples
- A £100 online payment with a standard UK card: 1.5% × £100 = £1.50, plus 20p: £1.70. You keep £98.30. With a premium UK card the fee is £3.00.
- A £100 payment from an EEA card that needs converting to pounds: £2.50 + 20p + 2% (£2.00) = £4.70. You keep £95.30.
- A £1,000 invoice paid by Bacs Direct Debit: 1% would be £10.00, but the fee is capped at £4.00, so you keep £996.00.
Common questions
How much does Stripe charge in the UK?
1.5% + 20p for standard UK cards and 2.8% + 20p for premium UK cards. EEA cards are 2.5% + 20p and other international cards 3.15% + 20p, with 2% more if currency conversion is needed. On £100 that is £1.70 for a standard UK card.
What is a premium UK card on Stripe?
A card Stripe classes as premium is charged 2.8% + 20p instead of 1.5% + 20p. You do not choose this: the customer's card decides it, and Stripe's pricing page links its guide to card types.
Is Bacs Direct Debit cheaper than cards?
For most amounts, yes: 1% with a 20p minimum and a £4 cap. Above £400 the fee stays at £4, so a £2,000 payment costs £4 by Bacs and £30.20 on a standard UK card.
How much does Stripe charge for in-person payments in the UK?
1.4% + 10p for UK and EEA cards and 2.9% + 10p for other cards, plus 10p per payment if you take it with Tap to Pay on a phone. Card readers are bought separately.
How much should I charge to receive a set amount?
Switch the calculator to 'Amount to ask for' and enter what you want to keep. It finds the smallest payment that leaves you at least that much after Stripe's fees, for the card type you choose.
What does this calculator leave out?
Post-payment invoices and Billing (their caps are in US dollars), disputes (£20.00 each), Instant Payouts, Radar, custom pricing and card readers. It uses Stripe's UK pricing page.
