How it works

Square charges a percentage of each payment plus, for card payments, a fixed fee. The rate depends on how the customer pays and on your plan. On Square Free it is 2.6% + $0.15 for a card in person, 3.3% + $0.30 for a card online or on an invoice, 2.9% + $0.30 through the payments API, and 3.5% + $0.15 for a card typed in or kept on file. Plus ($49 a month per location) lowers in-person cards to 2.5% and online cards to 2.9%; Premium ($149) lowers in-person cards to 2.4%. Afterpay is 6% + $0.30 on every plan. ACH bank transfers are 1% with a $1 minimum, capped at $5 through the API and at $10 on an invoice with Plus or Premium; the pricing page shows no cap for invoices on Free. A card issued outside the US adds 1.5%. You keep the payment minus these fees; plan fees are charged monthly, not per payment.

Worked examples

  1. A $100 card payment in person on Square Free: 2.6% × $100 = $2.60, plus $0.15: $2.75 in fees. You keep $97.25. If the card was issued outside the US, 1.5% more ($1.50) leaves $95.75.
  2. A $100 online card payment: $3.30 + $0.30 = $3.60 on Free, $2.90 + $0.30 = $3.20 on Plus. The 0.4% difference covers Plus's $49 monthly fee once a location takes about $12,250 a month online.
  3. A $2,000 invoice paid by ACH bank transfer: 1% = $20.00 on Square Free, which shows no cap for invoices, but capped at $10.00 on Plus or Premium.
