How it works

Stripe charges a percentage of each payment plus a fixed fee. Online card payments cost 2.9% + CA$0.30; Stripe adds 0.8% if the card was issued outside Canada, 0.5% if the card number was typed in by hand, and 2% if the payment has to be converted into Canadian dollars. Klarna starts at 5.99% + CA$0.30. Pre-authorised debits cost 1% + CA$0.40, and never more than CA$5.00 in total. In person, most cards cost 2.7% + CA$0.05, Interac debit cards a flat CA$0.15 and international cards 3.5% + CA$0.05, plus CA$0.15 per payment taken with Tap to Pay. You keep the payment minus these fees.

Worked examples

  1. A $100 online payment with a Canadian card: 2.9% × $100 = $2.90, plus $0.30: $3.20. You keep $96.80.
  2. A $100 payment from a US card that needs converting: $2.90 + $0.30 + 0.8% ($0.80) + 2% ($2.00) = $6.00. You keep $94.00.
  3. A $1,000 invoice paid by pre-authorised debit: 1% + $0.40 would be $10.40, but the fee is capped at $5.00, so you keep $995.00.
