How it works

Each marketplace charges in its own way. eBay takes 13.6% of the item, shipping and sales tax plus $0.40 an order in most categories. Etsy takes a $0.20 listing renewal, 6.5% of the item and shipping, and 3% + $0.25 processing on the whole order. Mercari takes 10% of the item and shipping. Depop US takes no selling fee, only 3.3% + $0.45 processing on the whole order. Poshmark takes 20% of the price ($2.95 under $15), and the buyer pays for the label. Whatnot takes 8% of the item price in most categories for smaller sellers, plus 2.9% + $0.30 processing. This page runs your item through the same calculators as each platform's own page and ranks them by what you keep after your costs.

Worked examples

  1. A $50 item with $8 shipping that pays for your label: Depop leaves you $47.64, Mercari $44.20, Etsy $44.04, Whatnot $44.02, eBay $41.71 and Poshmark $40.00.
  2. Fees on shipping matter: eBay, Etsy and Mercari take their percentage on the shipping you charge too, so the same $8 costs you about $1.09 on eBay and $0.80 on Mercari.
  3. Sales tax raises eBay's fee (13.6% applies to the tax) and the processing fees on Etsy, Depop and Whatnot, but not Mercari's or Poshmark's. Add your buyer's tax rate under Postage and tax to see it.

Common questions

Which selling site has the lowest fees?

For US sales above a few dollars, Depop has the lowest fees since it dropped its selling fee: only 3.3% + $0.45 processing. Poshmark is usually the most expensive at 20%. The ranking depends on price, shipping and category, so enter your own item.

Is eBay or Etsy cheaper to sell on?

It depends on the item. On a $50 item with $8 shipping, Etsy leaves you $44.04 and eBay $41.71 in most categories. eBay's fee also applies to the buyer's sales tax; Etsy's transaction fee does not.

Is Mercari or Poshmark cheaper?

Mercari: a flat 10% of the item and shipping. Poshmark: 20% of the price ($2.95 under $15), with the buyer paying the label. On a $50 item Mercari usually leaves you more.

Why does Poshmark show no postage cost?

On Poshmark and Whatnot the buyer pays for the platform's shipping label, so you neither receive the shipping nor pay for the label. On the other sites we assume the buyer's shipping pays for your label; enter your real postage if it differs.

What does this comparison assume?

eBay most categories with no Store, Etsy without Offsite Ads, Mercari with a free direct deposit, Depop with your own label and no boost, Poshmark outside Texas, and Whatnot at 8% for sellers under $15,000 in four weeks. Each platform's calculator lets you change these.
