How it works

eBay.ca charges one final value fee when an item sells, worked out on the total amount of the sale: the item price, the shipping you charge and the sales tax the buyer pays. In most categories it is 13.6% of that total up to $7,500 and 2.35% of the part above, plus $0.30 per order if the total is $10 or less and $0.40 if it is more. Books, movies and music pay 15.3%; coins and paper money and trading cards 13.25%; guitars and basses 6.7%; NFTs 5%. Athletic shoes pay 8% with no per-order fee at $150 or more. If the item ships outside Canada without eBay International Shipping, eBay adds 0.4% for the US or 1% elsewhere. Sellers rated Below Standard pay 6% more (7% after four months), and a Very High rate of 'item not as described' returns adds 5% (6%). You keep the item price and shipping minus these fees; the tax goes to the government.

Worked examples

  1. eBay's own example: a phone that sells for $400 with free shipping to a buyer in Ontario. The total with 13% HST is $452, so the final value fee is 13.6% × $452 + $0.40 = $61.87.
  2. eBay's own example: a trading card sold for $9,500 to a buyer in Ontario, total $10,735 with HST: 13.25% × $7,500 + 2.35% × $3,235 + $0.40 = $1,070.17.
  3. A $100 item with no shipping to Ontario: 13.6% × $113 = $15.37, plus $0.40, so $15.77 in fees and you keep $84.23. Shipped to the US, add 0.4% × $113 = $0.45.
