How it works

If you sell on eBay.co.uk as a UK-based private seller, selling is free: no final value fee and no regulatory operating fee. You only pay a 3% international fee on the total when the buyer's address is outside the UK, plus listing fees after 300 free listings a month and any optional upgrades. Business sellers pay a final value fee that depends on the category, worked out on the total amount of the sale (item price, postage and any tax), plus 30p for orders of £10 or less and 40p above. Some categories use lower rates on the part above a threshold, such as 6.9% up to £1,000 and 3% above for mobile phones. On top come a 0.35% regulatory operating fee and, for buyers abroad, an international fee of 1.05% to 2%. Business fees are quoted without VAT; eBay adds 20%. Top Rated Sellers get 10% off the percentage part on Premium Service listings.

Worked examples

  1. A private seller sells a £50 jacket with £4 postage to a UK buyer: no selling fees, so they receive £54.00. To a US buyer, the 3% international fee is £1.62.
  2. A business seller sells the same jacket in Clothes, Shoes & Accessories: 11.9% × £54 = £6.43, plus 40p, plus 0.35% × £54 = £0.19. Fees £7.02; they receive £46.98. With 20% VAT on the fees (£1.40), £45.58.
  3. A business seller sells a £1,200 phone: 6.9% on the first £1,000 (£69.00) and 3% on £200 (£6.00), plus 40p and £4.20 regulatory fee. Fees £79.60; they receive £1,120.40 before VAT.

Common questions

Is it free to sell on eBay UK?

Yes for UK-based private sellers: no final value fee and no regulatory operating fee since eBay's change for private sellers. You still pay for listings beyond 300 a month, optional upgrades, and a 3% international fee if the buyer is abroad.

How much does eBay take from a business seller?

A final value fee by category on the total including postage, usually 9.9% to 12.9% (11.9% for clothes, 14.9% for jewellery, lower rates above set amounts in some categories), plus 30p or 40p per order and a 0.35% regulatory operating fee. Fees are quoted without VAT.

Do eBay UK fees include VAT?

Fees for business sellers are quoted without VAT and eBay adds VAT at 20%. VAT-registered businesses can usually reclaim it. Private-seller fees are quoted including VAT.

Does eBay charge fees on postage?

For business sellers, yes: the final value fee and the regulatory operating fee are on the total amount of the sale, which includes the postage you charge. Private sellers pay no final value fee at all.

Should I sell as a private or a business seller?

It depends on what you do, not on the fees: if you buy to resell or sell regularly to make a profit, eBay and the law expect you to register as a business. The calculator shows both so you can see the difference.

What does this calculator leave out?

Listing fees and free allowances, Shop subscriptions, optional upgrades, Promoted Listings, the 10p per-order fee in some Collectables and Home categories, vehicles and eBay Live. It uses eBay's UK fee pages for private and business sellers.
