How it works

PayPal charges a UK business a percentage of each payment received plus a fixed fee that depends on the currency: 30p for payments in pounds. Goods and services payments, PayPal Checkout and most other commercial payments cost 2.9% + 30p. A card payment from a buyer who has no PayPal account costs 1.2% + 30p, and Buy Now Pay Later 3.9% + 30p. QR codes cost 1.5% + 10p above £10 and 2% + 5p up to £10. When the buyer is outside the UK, PayPal adds 1.29% for the EEA and 1.99% elsewhere. If the money arrives in another currency and PayPal converts it, the rate includes 3% above the base exchange rate. On request PayPal offers a tiered plan: 2.4% after £4,000 and 2.1% after £8,000 of commercial sales in the previous month.

Worked examples

  1. A £100 goods and services payment from a UK buyer: 2.9% × £100 = £2.90, plus 30p: £3.20. You keep £96.80.
  2. The same £100 from a buyer in France: 1.29% more (£1.29), so £4.49 in fees. From the US: 1.99% more, £5.19.
  3. On the tiered plan with more than £8,000 of sales last month, the same £100 costs 2.1% + 30p = £2.40.
