How much does Etsy take from a £25 sale?

Fees on one item with no postage, not from Offsite Ads, with VAT on Etsy's fees (no VAT ID):

Item priceEtsy feesYou keep
£10£1.44£8.56
£25£3.30£21.70
£50£6.39£43.61
£100£12.58£87.42
£200£24.95£175.05
£500£62.08£437.92

Plus the US$0.20 listing renewal per item, converted at Etsy's rate. Postage you charge adds 6.5% + 4% + 0.48%. With a VAT ID, VAT on fees falls away.

How it works

Etsy charges a UK seller several fees on each order. The transaction fee is 6.5% of the item price, the postage you charge and any gift wrap; UK prices include your VAT, so the fee is charged on that too. Payment processing through Etsy Payments is 4% plus £0.20 per order on the whole amount the buyer pays. The Regulatory Operating fee for sellers in the UK is 0.48% of the item price, postage and gift wrap. Each item sold renews its listing for 0.20 USD, which Etsy converts to pounds at the market rate; it does not publish that rate, so enter today's rate to include it. If the buyer came from one of Etsy's offsite ads, the Offsite Ads fee is 15% of the order (12% once your shop has passed 10,000 USD in sales over a year), capped at 100 USD per order. Listing in a currency other than pounds adds 2.5%. Etsy's fees are quoted without VAT: if you have not given Etsy a VAT ID, it adds VAT, here at the UK standard rate of 20%, to its fees. This calculator does not add VAT to payment processing, because Etsy does not say the UK is a country where it does.

Worked examples

  1. A £25 print with £3.95 postage, no VAT ID: transaction 6.5% × £28.95 = £1.88, processing 4% × £28.95 = £1.16 plus £0.20, regulatory 0.48% × £28.95 = £0.14, VAT 20% × £2.02 = £0.40. Fees £3.78; you keep £25.17, less the US$0.20 listing renewal.
  2. The same order with a VAT ID: no VAT on fees, so fees are £3.38 and you keep £25.57, less the listing renewal.
  3. A £50 mug from an Offsite Ad at 15%, no postage, no VAT ID: transaction £3.25, processing £2.20, regulatory £0.24, Offsite Ads £7.50, VAT 20% × £10.99 = £2.20. Fees £15.39; you keep £34.61.

Common questions

How much does Etsy take from a sale in the UK?

A 6.5% transaction fee and a 0.48% Regulatory Operating fee on the item price plus postage and gift wrap, payment processing of 4% + £0.20 per order, and a US$0.20 listing renewal. Without a VAT ID, Etsy adds 20% VAT to its fees. On a £25 item with no postage that is £3.30 plus the listing renewal, so you keep £21.70.

What is Etsy's Regulatory Operating fee in the UK?

0.48% of the item price plus postage, gift wrap and personalisation, charged on every order to sellers based in the UK. Etsy says it covers the cost of complying with UK regulation. VAT is added to it where VAT applies.

Does Etsy charge VAT on its fees in the UK?

Yes, unless you have given Etsy a VAT ID. Etsy's fees are quoted without VAT; UK sellers without a VAT ID are charged VAT on them each month and get a monthly VAT invoice. With a VAT ID, Etsy does not charge it.

Why is the Etsy listing fee in dollars?

Etsy sets the listing fee at 0.20 USD and converts it to pounds at the market rate when it is charged. Etsy does not publish the rate, so enter today's rate in the calculator to include the fee; leave it blank and the fee is shown separately in dollars.

How much should I charge to keep a set amount?

Switch the calculator to 'Price to ask' and enter what you want to keep. It finds the lowest item price that leaves you at least that much after Etsy's fees, with your postage, quantity, ads and VAT settings.

What does this calculator leave out?

The one-time shop set-up fee, Etsy Ads (you set a daily budget), Etsy Plus and Pattern subscriptions, postage labels, deposit fees and VAT on processing fees. It uses Etsy's Fees & Payments and Etsy Payments policies and its UK help pages.
