How it works

PayPal charges an Australian business a percentage of each payment received plus a fixed fee that depends on the currency: A$0.30 for payments in Australian dollars. Goods and services, invoices and other commercial payments cost 2.9% + A$0.30. When the buyer is outside Australia, PayPal adds 1 percentage point. Payments by QR code cost 1.2%, or 2.2% from overseas. Businesses that mostly take payments under A$10 can ask PayPal for the micropayments rate, 5% + A$0.05 (6% + A$0.05 from overseas), which then applies to all their commercial payments. If PayPal converts the money from another currency, its exchange rate includes 3% above the base rate. You keep the payment minus these fees.

Worked examples

  1. A $100 goods and services payment from an Australian buyer: 2.9% × $100 = $2.90, plus $0.30: $3.20. You keep $96.80.
  2. The same $100 from a buyer in the US: 3.9% × $100 = $3.90, plus $0.30: $4.20. You keep $95.80.
  3. A $5 payment on the micropayments rate: 5% × $5 = $0.25, plus $0.05: $0.30. At the standard rate it would be $0.45.
