How it works

PayPal charges a Canadian business a percentage of each payment received plus a fixed fee that depends on the currency: CA$0.30 for commercial payments in Canadian dollars. Goods and services, invoices and other commercial payments cost 2.9% + CA$0.30; PayPal Pay Later costs 4.9% + CA$0.30. QR code payments cost 1.9% + CA$0.10 when they are above $10 and 2.4% + CA$0.05 when they are $10 or less. When the buyer is in the US PayPal adds 0.8 percentage points, and 1 point for anywhere else. Businesses that mostly take payments under CA$12 can ask for the micropayments rate, 5% + CA$0.05 for Canadian and US buyers (6% + CA$0.05 for others), which then applies to all their commercial payments. If PayPal converts the money from another currency, its exchange rate includes at least 4% above the base rate. You keep the payment minus these fees.

Worked examples

  1. A $100 goods and services payment from a Canadian buyer: 2.9% × $100 = $2.90, plus $0.30: $3.20. You keep $96.80.
  2. The same $100 from a buyer in the US: 3.7% × $100 = $3.70, plus $0.30: $4.00. From the UK: 3.9%, so $4.20.
  3. A $20 QR code payment at a market stall: 1.9% × $20 = $0.38, plus $0.10: $0.48. At $10 it would be 2.4% + $0.05 = $0.29.
